SFUSD High School Applications: Tips, Advice, and Important Dates

Helpful Advice for Applying to San Francisco Public High Schools. For families enrolling in Fall 2016.

San Francisco Unified School District is a school choice district. You can apply to any high school or program in SFUSD. You can list as many schools as you want.

Explore your options.
  • Apply to any school in San Francisco. 
  • Ruth Asawa School of the Arts & Lowell High School have early deadlines and separate applications.
  • Charter schools are also public schools. Contact each charter directly for information on how to apply. 
Get to know the schools.
  • Attend tours and open houses with your student.
  • Let your child shadow at high schools. 
  • Turn in your application by the January 15, 2016 deadline.
  • Applying late will hurt your chances. 
  • Lowell and SOTA have early deadlines and separate applications.
*List as many options as you can, in the order that you prefer.

*Listing many schools/pathways will increase your chances of getting one of your choices.

*If applying to Lowell or SOTA, rank these options with all other options on the SFUSD application form in order of preference.

Lowell and SOTA Tips
  • Submit a Lowell application AND SFUSD application form by December 11, 2015
  • Submit SOTA application packet to SOTA school office and sign up for an audition by December 4, 2015
  • Submit portfolio if applying to creative writing, media, technical theater, and visual
  • Submit SFUSD application form by January 15, 2016 to SFUSD
  • Visit the SOTA office or sfsota.org for application form and more information
Important High School Dates:

December 4, 2015
Deadline to apply for SOTA & sign up for an audition, if needed.

December 11, 2015
Deadline to turn in application for Lowell HS.

January 15, 2016
Round 1 deadline to apply for all other SFUSD schools and programs.
