We always love to hear what parents are really thinking as they tour elementary, middle and high schools. With the deadline for SFUSD Round 1 enrollment just having passed on January 15, 2016, we decided to conduct an informal poll to learn more about the factors that influence school choice.

The results are certainly not scientific (more anecdotal), but they provide a snapshot into our decision-making process as parents and caregivers.

The poll question was:

What factor was the MOST influential for your family when you initially picked your first choice public school(s)?

  • 37 people responded to the poll, with the following breakout:

Language program (such as Spanish or Mandarin) -- 7                  18.9%

                    Leadership at the school -- 1                                                             2.7%

                    Location/convenience to work or home -- 10                                   27.0%

                    Perceived academic rigor --  6                                                        16.2%

                    School culture/climate --   8                                                              21.6%

                    Other -- 5                                                                                         13.5%

  • Here are the write-in answers those who chose the “Other” category:

Combination of leadership and opportunities (academic and other)

                    Arts program (SOTA)

                    Fit with student

                    Participation in feeder middle school

Thank you very much to everyone who participated.
