An 11th grader from Ruth Asawa School of the Arts (SOTA) is one of the confirmed deceased from the Oakland "Ghost Ship" warehouse fire that occurred on Friday, Dec. 2. School administrators and San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) officials coordinated over the weekend to make sure community members were informed and counseling services were immediately available for students and faculty when everyone returned on Monday morning. read more 

President-elect Donald Trump's pick for education secretary, Betsy DeVos, would be the first person to head the department in its more than 35-year history who hasn't either attended public schools or sent her own children to them. DeVos, a Michigan philanthropist and GOP political donor who still needs to get through U.S. Senate confirmation before she can assume the helm of the agency, studied at private schools through her entire K-12 career, graduating from Holland Christian High School in Michigan, according to a family spokesman, John Truscott. The fight over charter schools has been building in the African-American community. These schools, which often operate in high-poverty areas and serve children of color, are viewed as a lifeline by many parents.
